Excerpts from recent Greek History lessons, from eyewitnesses.

The history of the two branches of the Kouzos family, as presented on the website of Nikos Kouzos, http://www.nickkouzos.com, is a typical story of Greek refugees of Asia Minor, as experienced by Hellenism, after the Balkan wars of 1912-13, and the Asia Minor disaster in 1922.

Despite the fact that I call it ‘typical’, the family story includes historical elements that were not limited simply, to atrocities of the war, but extend to historical events that touch upon, well-known events that expose some of the tactics followed, both, by the Ottoman Empire, and the newly established regime of modern Turkey, at the expense of the Greek minorities.

The site includes description of such actions taken by Greeks of Asia Minor to preserve their national identity, and physical survival.

That is, it highlights how the Greeks created the real middle class of Turkey, within an Ottoman regime, how Hellenism of Asia Minor communicated with Aegean islands and the rest of Greek mainland, and the rest of Hellenism of diaspora, how the Greek community generated wealth.

Greeks managed to do that providing high-level services to the Turkish state, despite the Ottoman Empire’s attempt to marginalize most non-Muslim minorities, as second-class citizens, while the Ottomans were occupied gathering all their forces to expand with conquests throughout central Europe, the Balkans, and Africa.

The site also highlights the fact that Hellenism functioned as a refuge for the Greek revolutionaries from the Peloponnese and the rest of Greek mainland, when Turkey tried to suppress the revolution of 1821, with its alliance with Egypt.

Many facts are revealed about the way the Turks extorted Greeks to collect, special taxes for the Sultan, but also later, how the Young Turks tried to gain prestige and recognition from the West, as a reformed civilized European country.

Stories are also given, by eyewitness, about the Turkish Barbarity towards Hellenism, even before the invasion of the Greek army that took place during1919.

The burning and destruction of villages, cities and towns with a 100% Greek population, started during 1915, and even before that.

Essentially, the Young Turks applied to the Greek populations a similar genocide as they did to the Armenians, which proves that the Greek military action was, to a large extent, a justified reaction, regardless of the strategic error of extending the attack deep into the region.

Finally, among other things, the story covers the excellent behavior of the Greek army and specifically the actions of the ‘independent division’ of the Greek army, under General Theotokis, who, after the intervention of the priest of Kirkagats, cousin of the Chief Marshal Theodoros Kolokotronis, saved the population of the entire city from massacre.

The entire population that followed the independent division consisted of 5,000 Greeks and 2,000 Armenians.

General Theotokis demanded and convinced 15,000 Turks, inhabitants of Kirkagats  to spend all  night baking bread for the Greek army which was retreating to the port of Dikeli.

Ο προϋπολογισμός του έργου της ψηφιοποίησης του υλικού των 46 Δημόσιων Βιβλιοθηκών ήταν 5.600.000€ και συγχρηματοδοτήθηκε κατά 80% από το Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοτικό Ταμείο και 20% από εθνικούς πόρους. Ψηφιοποιήθηκαν 16.200.000 σελίδες, που αντιστοιχούν σε 41.444 τίτλους βιβλίων, εφημερίδων, περιοδικών, χαρτών, εγγράφων, χειρογράφων. Είναι ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα έργα ψηφιοποίησης στη χώρα μας. Το ψηφιακό αποθετήριο της Βιβλιοθήκης έγινε στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος EdLocal, που χρηματοδοτεί η Ε.Ε. Το αποθετήριο αυτό περιλαμβάνει εκτός της συλλογής της Βιβλιοθήκης, τις συλλογές της Ιεράς Μονής Τιμίου Προδρόμου, Σκήτης Βεροίας και του Λυκείου Ελληνίδων παράρτημα Βεροίας.

Στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος EDlocal, η Δημόσια Κεντρική Βιβλιοθήκη της Βέροιας λειτουργεί και ως συσσωρευτής μεταδεδομένων από επιλεγμένα αποθετήρια και διαθέτει το ψηφιακό υλικό στην ευρωπαϊκή πύλη πολιτισμού Europeana.

ANCESTRY INFORMATION (In Greek and English)

(Εισαγωγή στα γενεαλογικά δένδρα, γενικά και ειδικότερα στο προσωπικό γενεαλογικό δένδρο του  N Kouzou.)

Η οικογενειακή ομάδα που δημιουργήθηκε προσωπικά στο  f/b στόχο έχει την ανάρτηση θεμάτων  και πληροφοριών που αφορούν τα μέλη της ομάδας που συχνά βρίσκονται διάσπαρτα σε διαφορετικές χώρες και ηπείρους  με αποτέλεσμα να χάνουν σιγά σιγά την επαφή μεταξύ τους.

Μετά την πρώτη και ίσως την δεύτερη γενιά, στην ξενιτιά, μειώνεται η αίσθηση της ανάγκης επικοινωνίας με τίς ρίζες και την προέλευση. Ταυτόχρονα όμως δημιουργείται σε πολλούς  μία τάση νοσταλγίας και αναζήτησης της ρίζας  του καθενός.

Στην τάση αυτή προσπάθησα να συμβάλω με την δημιουργία ενός γενεαλογικού δένδρου  χρησιμοποιώντας το γνωστό σύστημα software ANCESTRY που πολλοί χρησιμοποιούν εντάσσοντας ονόματα και πληροφορίες είτε σε ξεχωριστά αρχεία ατομικά δικά τους η συμβάλλοντας με προσθήκες σαν “contributors” στο δικό μου Family tree , Nick Kouzos Family Tree το οποίο περιλαμβάνει σημαντικό αριθμό ατόμων  με ονόματα και στοιχεία από τους κλάδους των γενεαλογικών δένδρων των γονέων μου.

Στους κλάδους αυτούς προστέθηκαν κλάδοι των γενεαλογικών δένδρων των συζύγων των αδερφών μου με αποτέλεσμα να περιλαμβάνονται ονόματα ανιόντων και κατιόντων  μελών  γενεαλογικών δένδρων που ξεπερνούν τα 400 ονόματα με πληροφορίες φωτογραφίες κείμενα video κλπ.

Όπως είναι φυσικό, η προσπάθεια αυτή αποτελεί ένα πολύ φιλόδοξο  εγχείρημα που δεν μπορεί να έχει πλήρη επιτυχία από πλευράς ακρίβειας και πληρότητας, είναι όμως μία αρχή και μπορεί να παρακινήσει ορισμένους από τα μέλη να ξεκινήσουν είτε το δικό τους γενεαλογικό δένδρο ή να γίνουν  contributors στο υφιστάμενο μετά από πρόσκληση που μπορεί να τους σταλεί εάν το επιθυμούν.

Οι βασικοί κλάδοι που έχουν περιληφθεί στο   Nick Kouzos Family tree είναι:

Όπως θα φαντάζεστε τα γενεαλογικά δένδρα έχουν την τάση να μεγαλώνουν υπερβολικά όμως εμένα με βοήθησαν να ανακαλύψω συγγενείς δεύτερου και τρίτου βαθμού που έγιναν πολύ καλοί και ενδιαφέροντες φίλοι.

Ειδικά για το ιστορικό των άμεσων πατρογονικών δένδρων Κούζου και Κονσολιδου που συνθέτουν χαρακτηριστικές ιστορίες των Ελλήνων προσφύγων από την Μικρά Ασία έχω δημιουργήσει ένα ξεχωριστό  site :  www.nickkouzos.com

Στο  site   αυτό υπάρχει, ταυτόχρονα με την οικογενειακή ιστορία, πολύ γενικό και ιστορικό ενημερωτικό  υλικό για τις σχέσεις Ελλάδας και Τουρκίας.

ANCESTRY INFORMATION

(Introduction on genealogy trees, general and specifically for N Kouzos Ancestry tree.)

The “Family group’ created within f / b, aims to post topics and information relating to F/B family team members and friends who are often scattered in different countries and continents, thus slowly losing contact with each other.

After the first and perhaps the second generation of emigrating families, the sense of need to communicate with the roots and origin is reducing.

At the same time, nostalgia and curiosity for “Back to roots” trends and searches are generated for some individuals.

Following this trend I am trying to contribute to the creation of an Ancestry tree based on the familiar software “ANCESTRY” that many use in USA and internationally.

The system provides facilities to include names and information in the form of documents or photos.

Members can create  either their own Ancestry tree separately or add information and corrections as «contributors» to my Family tree, Nick Kouzos Family Tree, which includes a significant number of people with the names and contact information. This can be performed at no charge after invitation that I can sent from time to time, assuming I have a mail address or as members of F/B.

To these parental family branches I have added branches originating from the genealogical tree of my wife and the spouses of my sisters which would include names of anions and cations of the genealogical trees of more than 400 names with information, photos, videos, texts etc.

Naturally, this effort is a very ambitious project that cannot be fully successful in terms of accuracy and completeness, but it is a start and may prompt some members to start either their own genealogy or become contributors to existing Ancestry tree.

In this site, along with family history,  there is general and historical information material, about the period and the Greek-Turkish relations.
